Hafthor Bjornsson Deadlifts 501kg for a New World Record Calls out Eddie Hall to Boxing Match

Hafthor Bjornsson was set to attempt a 501kg Deadlift for a new world record At Worlds Ultimate Strongman Bahrain but then a pandemic hit the world and contests everywhere were canceled. Worlds Ultimate Strongman announced its Feats of Strength Series with new record attempt lifts being attempted every week as a way to keep the sport going when the world has changed.

There has been a lot of criticism and argument on both sides of the legitimacy of such attempts “out of competition” but after yesterday I feel given the conditions of the world and that every measure of legitimacy possible was taken by Worlds Ultimate Strongman including live weighing of every calibrated plate and using the head referee in Strongman Magnus Ver Magnusson and given that there is no one sanctioning body for Strongman I have updated the Starting Strongman Strongman records to show it as a record. This list is unofficial and other sanctioning bodies and fans may not recognize the lift but that is up to each individual to decide for themselves. One thing is clear it was the heaviest deadlift completed of all time from standard (9″) height

Below you can watch my take on the event 10 minutes after it finished.

Since recording Eddie Hall has released his own statement agreeing to the fight.

My thoughts on the fight is it is great that the two are getting paid. Countless Strongmen have came and went in the sport while making very little money and after a few years are largely forgotten other than by the most dedicated of fans. It is a rough sport and there is no first place that even pays 6 figures let alone the rumored 7 figure contract for the fight.

My main concern is how this will effect Hafthor’s Strongman career. When is it going to be? I feel it would be hard to train for both at the same time and Eddie has been retired for a few years now and can train more specific for this with less to lose. Hafthor is likely in the prime of his career and I feel has the potential to become the greatest Strongman of all time but if he makes 1 million or more from this fight would he be motivated to compete for 50-85k at Worlds Strongest Man or the Arnold?

Obviously Hafthor should do what is best for him and his family especially with a baby on the way but if the fight takes away from his Strongman campaign there will be talks of “what if” for years to come.
