Finding Motivation Amongst Moderation.

I started weight training with a goal of changing my physique and getting stronger when I was 13. I am now about to turn 37, 24 years of lifting. At times lifting was my entire life. The past few years I have lost a bit of my drive and motivation. I had some health and injury issues that made me decide to stop competing in Strongman in 2014. Lifting without competing and when certain movements seem to do more harm than good is tough to adjust to. I don’t think I truly have found that balance yet.

I have also realized that I am an all or nothing kind of person. I am not great at moderation, I started my business and I let that consume me and my own training suffer. I became a dad and put everything into being a father and let my business and training suffer.

Keeping a training log and blogging is how I originally connected with people and kept motivation for training when no one around me cared about training for Strongman like I did. I have gone away from that as I get worried people will judge me based on what I can do now or more realistically what I can’t do now. I do know that is illogical and did not stop me in the past when I started.

What I am going to do with this is share some training, some of my thoughts and maybe a little bit of advice along the way. Today I thought about what I do enjoy about training and what makes me happy. It doesn’t have to be what is optimal or “best” what part of movement and environment makes me feel better mentally.

  • I like training mid morning
  • I like training outside
  • I like being in the sun
  • I like bodybuilding style movements.
  • I especially like overhead pressing and shoulder training
  • I like moving events (not yoke)

I realize the training outside thing is one of the reasons I really got drawn to strongman in the first place. It was mostly outside. I have a foot injury that is limiting how much strongman movements I can train at the moment but I might cover that in more detail later.

So after thinking about what parts of training I do enjoy after training hasnt been enjoyable I dragged my bench outside grabbed some dumbbells and did

How To Train Strongman In A Regular Gym

Incline DB flies 3×12

Incline DB bench 3×20

Rear delt flies 3×20

Dumbbell curls 3×12

After a rough night of no sleep with my son and feeling down this morning I felt a lot better after this. I am going to work on setting up good habits and being consistent from there I can worry about doing more work.

What are your favorite things about training? What makes you feel better?

I am now going to think about how I can set up an outdoor gym…
